Episode #44 of the Hindu Parenting Podcast is about the festival of Onam. What is the actual story of Onam according to Hindu tradition?
Sri Sanku T. Das shares his vast knowledge with us, tracing the historical origins of the festival, the rituals and significance of the pookolam, the Sadya and boat races as a temple tradition rooted in Hinduism. We talk about the problem of erasure of the Hindu roots of festivals and concerted efforts to turn them into anti-Hindu propaganda.
What can parents do to ensure that their children know the true significance of Hindu festivals? Sanku ji also talks about - who is a Hindu? The one whose life is defined by the five Mahayagnyas performed everyday. Find out what the five vratas or Mahayagnyas are towards the end of the podcast.
